4 Innovative Makeshift Workout Equipment that You Probably Didn’t Know About

Who needs the gym when you can make your own workout equipment at home?

Sometimes, going to the gym might be a hassle, especially if it is far off from your home. Luckily, with a bit of innovation and creativity, you could actually get a total body workout in the comfort of your own home with some makeshift workout gear.

 

1. Chair

Chairs are used to support our backs and lower body as we are seated. However, they can also double-up as workout gear to enhance your upper body strength and also stabilise your body.

Try doing triceps dips by positioning yourself at the edge of your chair. Alternatively, use the chair to stabilise your body during resistance training – this could range from calf raises, plie squats and leg swings.

However, make sure that you avoid putting all of your weight on the chair. Instead, use the chair to support your body in your workout.

 

2. Counter

If you have always struggled to do regular push-ups, try building your upper body strength by doing incline push-ups on your kitchen counter instead.

Not only is this an easier alternative to regular push-ups, but incline push-ups are also effective for toning the arms and growing your upper body strength. In addition, they are extremely easy to do! When attempting to do incline push-ups at your kitchen counter, make sure that your hands are slightly wider than shoulder-width apart. Also, try not to scrunch your neck or arch your back – as this could put unnecessary pressure on your upper and middle back.

Tip: Use your waiting time while you are cooking to do some incline push-ups at your kitchen counter.

 

3. Bench or Stool

Did you know that short benches and stools could be used for stepper workouts?

If you have always wanted long and lean legs, then you are in luck – because a simple stepping workout on your bench or stool could have you sweating bullets in seconds!

Stepper workouts may seem too easy at first, but they are excellent for getting your heart rate up and also building core and calf strength. In addition, stepping workouts challenge your leg-eye coordination and also enhance your glutes, quadriceps, hamstrings.

Low-cost, easy-to-use and low-maintenance, you would be surprised by how effective a stepper workout on your home bench can be. Do a few knee lifts, step ups, and bench jumps to get your heart rate up.

 

4. Pillow

While the humble pillow usually denotes rest and sleep, it can also be used for your workout.

There are two ways you can use a pillow for your workout. Firstly, you can use it to replace yoga blocks and elevate your body during stretching. For instance, if you find it hard to get into a centre split, simply place a pillow under your hips to give yourself some assistance. Similarly, if you struggle to press your lower back into the floor during Pilates or Yoga exercises, you could use a pillow to support your lower back until you get stronger.

Secondly, you could also make use of a pillow to cushion your joints. If you feel sharp pains in your hips, elbows or knees, try using a pillow to alleviate the pain.
